PIETERSON MEMORIAL

Hector Pieterson Memorial

Hector Pieterson

Cradled in the arms of Mbuyisa Makhubo

The Memorial opened in 2002 in Soweto: a walking distance from where policemen opened fire on students protesting against the imposition of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in black schools. On that fateful day -16 June 1976- 12-year old Hector and some of his colleagues lost their precious lives at the hands of the police.

The Museum outlines this 1976 Soweto Uprising through gripping exhibits which include text panels, photographs and film footage.

Both the Museum and Memorial serve to honor the young heroes and heroines who laid down their lives for freedom and democracy. Today, 16 June is recognized as South Africa's Youth Day.
